Get your Chakras in Balance

Posted on August 24th, 2010

Our bodies have sensitive areas that are the focal points of our emotions, feelings, intuition and insight. These energy points are called Chakras and are located on the mid-line of the body. There are seven of them, and they govern our psychological properties.

Ideally, all chakras would contribute to our being. Our instincts would work together with our feelings and promote clear thinking. However, this is usually not the case. Some chakras are not open enough being under-active, and to compensate, other chakras are over-active. The ideal state is where the chakras are balanced. To manage these universal concerns we must go inside ourselves. Among the steps we can take is the learning and practicing of meditation.  Meditation can be used to both discover whether we are in balance and to obtain balance.  “Centering” and “grounding” techniques should be used before beginning these meditations.  A grounding technique can be as simple as feeling your connection to the earth and being focused and present.  Centering usually requires your being relaxed.  Each chakra is also associated with a color and color therapy has proven to be a simple and effective way of balancing these energy centers in the body. The vibrational sound from specially tuned “singing bowls” is not only relaxing but also a way to keep the mind, body, spirit centered and in harmony.  Whatever method you use, take your time and achieve a deep state of relaxation. You may want to count slowly or visualize yourself walking through the forest, whatever it takes to become relaxed. Many of these techniques are offered at Life’s Journey Wellness Studio. We’ll help get your chakras in balance through deep breathing, movement, sound, color, food, and other tools.

Thai Yoga Massage Therapy increases energy flow and circulation

Posted on June 8th, 2010

As an active believer in the healing power of regular yoga practice and always in search of an effective therapeutic massage to treat her fibromyalgia pain, certified Thai yoga therapist and founder of Life’s Journey Yoga and Wellness, Kimberli Hargnett, wants to share the benefits of the ancient therapy with her clients. “After years of experience in holistic health, I’ve found that this particular therapy offers healing on such a deep level even after the first treatment” says Kimberli, who has experienced the marked benefits as both client and practitioner of Thai Yoga.

Thai Yoga Massage is not just some trendy yoga craze. The bodywork therapy has a history that dates to its traditional origin 2,500 years ago in India practiced as part of the healing system of Ayurveda. A unique blend of guided yoga postures, stretching, and massage increases energy flow and circulation to all areas of the body, relieves tension, and promotes a more balanced lifestyle. In Thai Yoga Massage the client lies on the floor on a comfortable mat as opposed to table massage which can be limiting to movement. Each session is catered specifically to the postures, stretching, and pressure your body needs making the therapy beneficial to all ages and levels of flexibility. Absolutely no yoga experience is required.

“We all live with stuck emotional energy stored throughout the body and this beneficial and enjoyable bodywork allows for the movement and release of negative holding patterns” -Kimberli Hargnett

If you are looking for a gentle and restoring therapy that merges the compassion of massage and the stress-relieving benefits of yoga, a Thai Yoga session at Life’s Journey Yoga and Wellness Center will certainly be a uplifting experience for you! Please call (904) 276-3116 or see our Thai Yoga Massage Therapy page for amazing summer specials!!

A Look Inside Our Hips With Pigeon Pose

Posted on May 18th, 2010

It’s quite common for us to carry stuck emotional energy in the “home” of our hips if we haven’t actively sought methods of release, such as prayer, meditation, positive thinking exercises, yoga, or other forms of stress-relief. When you really think about it, it’s no wonder we often feel tight in our hips when stretching or just moving them in general.
Kimberli in Pigeon Pose
“Breathe into any tightness you feel in your hips,” I often say to yoga students when we do the hip-opening posture, Pigeon, in class. “Then,” I continue, “on the exhale, let go of any stuck energy that’s hanging out there.” After flowing through this breathing pattern in Pigeon for several breaths, a lasting refreshment of the hips is typically felt upon releasing out of the pose. Ahh, nourishment to the hips! How good it feels when the “doors” of our hips begin opening to free us from “stuff”!

“I’m messy getting into the pose” one student shared with me, “but, once I’m there, awww, I love it. I can feel all of this being stretched,” she said while scanning the region of her hip with her hand.”

However, not everyone loves Pigeon. “I would much rather do Wheel than Pigeon,” another student said.

Like Wheel, Pigeon is so good for you,” I stated.

I know,” she replied, “but just as I don’t like to run but still do it because it’s good for me, well, that’s how I see Pigeon.”

After teaching a class about a week ago in which several students would have easily replaced Pigeon with another posture (and they certainly could have), I’ve been pondering if the varied emotional energy that Pigeon can trigger is perhaps a deeper reason why some folks would opt to leave this particular pose out of their yoga practice.

On a physical level, some Pigeon practitioners might simply feel tight in the hips, and, obviously, either enjoy or dislike the sensation of the stretch. But, wonder if during the time of holding Pigeon pose, the non-fans of Pigeon subconsciously find it simpler to also hold on to their “stuck energy” instead of letting it go and then maybe having to deal with it further a little later? So, just in case, we must remember to ask ourselves: Does hanging on to our stuck energy positively contribute to higher levels of our whole health? It is then that we may be more open to inviting, not rejecting, the blessed Pigeon.

Should stuck emotions happen to rise to the surface during Pigeon pose or any other posture, know that this “stuff” is better out than in. Simply further push this stale energy out of the body via nice, long inhalations and even longer exhalations! It is truly amazing to feel a lightness take over the body when we allow ourselves to breathe the “gook” away. I’m really thankful that my breath and I have gotten pretty chummy over the years, thanks to the process of yoga. And, I still remain in awe of the power of the breath, which I often refer to as our “natural medicine,” or “invisible soap and water”. It really does clean us up!

During my recent reflection about Pigeon pose, I found this wonderful Hip Opening = Heart Opening document on Yogster.net that gives us a closer look inside our hips in the loved — or not-so-loved — Pigeon pose.

Spread your wings…I mean hips…with Pigeon and watch the inner you rise and soar!

Energy is Different Every Day

Posted on April 20th, 2010

I often recall and repeat the words of one of my very first yoga teachers who regularly said this to her yoga students during class: “Energy is different every day!” She would use those words to help remove any expectations we might have been placing on ourselves during our yoga practice. Because of the way energy shifts from day to day, areas such as our feelings, levels of flexibility, etc., may shift, too. And, it’s all okay, because….why?

Energy is different every day! That’s why there’s that saying, a favorite of mine: “The only thing that stays the same is that everything is always changing.” Not sure where I first heard this saying or who said it, but I sure do love it — because it’s so true!

On March 11, I discussed this very subject with Michelle Shults, a Life’s Journey yoga student and friend of mine. Here is that dialogue…

Penny (me): I really enjoyed working at the studio yesterday….the energy was right. But you know that energy can be different every day!

Michelle (LJ student): The universe moves every day, so the energy is in different places all the time.

Penny: Exactly. I love how you worded that…might add that (quoting you) in my next blog entry.:-) It’s a great explanation as to why energy shifts. But the goal is that through the “universe moving,” we have to try to keep our good energy and balance, but sometimes we do get thrown off. The goal, however, is to try to line back up. I had wanted to write (blog) about the vibe at the studio yesterday. Now, after this discussion, I am clearer as to what angle I can go with.:-) Good deal…and, of course, I will quote you.:-)

Michelle: Yeah, and it really does (energy shifts). We can’t lose sight of it if we depend on it to be right there in our grasp all the time. Then, we can get discouraged, ya know? Balance is the key to even distribution of energy.

Penny: Yes!!! “Even distribution of energy”…my latest words in my yoga classes when helping people to “balance” where they feel the tightness in the stretch…
Michelle: Really?

Penny: For instance, in Forward Facing Bend posture, many want to just have straight legs when folding forward, but it often feels too tight in the legs for some, so we should bend at the knees as much as we need to…to get, as you said, that equal distribution of energy. (By the way, I have to credit Mark White at M Body Yoga for helping me more deeply understand the concept of “equal distribution of energy” in yoga postures.)

Michelle:
Really tightness in any area, especially, decision-making, fighting with someone (verbally) or physically, etc. The energy works where it needs to. You are so right not to hurt the body but to go as far as the energy will allow without getting hurt. Common sense is so easy. Too bad more people can’t get it. It has to be scientific for some people to understand.

Penny:
That energy just surfaces on its own (re fighting with someone), however, when we put the mental discipline behind it, we are, in fact, in control of that, too…..the mind part of yoga! There’s also an even distribution of energy that can be applied to that scenario, too…it’s just can be a little harder to listen to, because we often let emotions take over.

So, readers, are you listening to your mind, body, and spirit? How’s the energy in those areas for you today? At Sophia Dare Dentiste’s Significance back in December, during an elevator speech about Life’s Journey, I asked a group of women, by a show of hands, who felt balanced? No one raised their hand, but the grunts, chuckles and other sounds surfaced as an indicator that, boy oh boy, they needed to find more balance in their lives.

Well, folks, we have classes that FOCUS on precisely that…mind/body/spirit balance! Pleasant, nurturing classes AND other holistic services to help you restore your God-given balance. We at Life’s Journey are only a phone call (904) 276-3116 or e-mail info@lifesjourneywellness.com away.

Looking forward to helping you find your balance during this wonderful season of spring.

Spring into YOUR Balance, Penny

Spring Cleanse Retreat

Posted on March 29th, 2010

There was a recent post on our Facebook page that read: “working on preparations for ‘Spring Cleanse Retreat’, looking forward to the light & nutritious Living Food menu from our very own Raw Food Consultant, Penny Powell.”

I responded to that post with what I referred to as My “Raw Food” essay! I wrote:

On Saturday, I went to my cousin’s out-of-town bridal shower. After that lovely event, several of my family members went to my grandmother’s house, including an aunt of mine who was visiting from Bermuda and was highly curious about the Green Smoothie she had heard so much about. So, at my grandmother’s, I pulled out her very old but STRONG Cuisinart blender and got to demonstrating.

Read the rest of the entry coming on tomorrow’s blog at www.lifesjourneywellness.com. Find out how quickly the Green Smoothie can “push” that cleansing button for some folks.

Let’s get those colons cleaned out for Spring… That’s a big part of the “dirt” on Spring Cleaning!

Days later than planned, here’s the rest of the story:

I had quite a Green Smoothie audience, all intrigued by the simplicity of the process and the taste of their spinach, banana, pineapple smoothie. My cousin instantly decided that would be dinner for her this week. She went home with her mom’s blender, in addition to some smoothies in Mason jars I prepared that night.

Prior to my Saturday’s arrival near the Tampa area, my aunt had asked me what she could purchase for the Green Smoothie. I told her to simply get some greens, such as spinach, some bananas, and whatever other fruit she wanted.

By the time I had arrived, she had stocked the fridge with spinach, celery, carrots, pineapple, blueberries, apples, strawberries, and there were plenty bananas on the counter.

The first round of smoothie sampling consisted of the spinach, banana, pineapple combo. And, by the way, the smoothies initiated some quick overnight and/or morning cleansing for some….if you know what I mean! Let’s get those colons clean for Spring!

Another thing I did that night was took some leftover salad from the bridal shower (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, different color peppers, onion) and put that in the blender with about a cup of water and an avocado. That made a creamy soup-like smoothie, and spices could have been added to really pep it up. However, to add a touch of sweetness, I blended in two bananas and it turned out TERRIFIC.

My aunt liked that one even better than the initial one we had made…but she had also liked the first one, too. However, my cousin much preferred the fruity one. ***By the way, because the natural sugar in bananas feed cancer and such, that fruit is not recommended for those with such conditions.

The Living Food Beverage Party Continues…

On Sunday morning, the “party” continued with carrot/apple/ginger JUICE made in my grandmother’s JUICER (not blender)…and banana/strawberry smoothies made in her trusty Cuisinart BLENDER we had used on Saturday night. It was very exciting for me to see my family desiring to further increase their health via this simple, tasty way.

This week, I’m returning my “starter” juicer to my in-laws so they can improve their health, too. My mother-in-law gave me the juicer when she first heard I was interested in buying one many years ago. Since she wasn’t using hers at the time, she generously passed it on with Jay Kordich’s info-packed book, “The Juiceman’s Power of Juicing,” a resource I refer to often that has “Delicious Juice Recipes For Energy, Health, Weight Loss, And Relief From Scores Of Common Ailments.”

Since my smaller, starter juicer, I’ve upgraded my juicer (twice), and because my in-laws are in need of one, my juicing demo will be moving a little closer to home this week to refresh them on the process.

I hope to meet you at the retreat on Crystal Lake in Keystone Heights for some healthy juicing fun, too, as well as fun with smoothies, salads, raw-vegan pasta, healthy desserts, and more! Sure to be yummy fun, fun, fun! But, remember, tasty and healthy food is not only what this retreat is about.
